Contents of README:README ====== This document contains informations on how to build and run both suspex and the inspector. It contains the following sections: Build Tests Run Tests Test Environment Variables Test Areas and Other Directories Suspex Tests Image Comparison Inspector Interoperability Concerns ______________________________________________________________________________ Build Tests =========== First thing is to build Makefiles for all subdirectories. % xkmf % make Makefiles With all the Makefiles in place, you can either 1. build all tests at once % make all or 2. build tests in individual test areas, for example, % cd oc_sun % make all or build a single test in a specific test area, for example, % cd oc_sun % make lineAttr 3. build tests at run time using the "run_suspex" script. ______________________________________________________________________________ Run Tests ========= You can run suspex tests by test areas using the "run_suspex" script or you can run individual tests in any test areas. 1. Default is to run all tests in all supported modes available testareas: oc_sun rndr_sun struct_sun sc_sun ctl_hp errocp_hp fnt_hp inq_hp lut_hp nms_hp oca_hp ocp_hp plc_hp pick_hp rnd_hp str_hp trv_hp ------------------------------------------------------------------ For example, To echo all test environment variables: % run_suspex -env You should make sure all test environment variables are properly set in "run_suspex" before runnning suspex. More on this later. If you have already build all tests, this is what you do to run HP's tests only: % run_suspex -hp If you want to build and run tests in the "ocp_hp" and "oc_sun" area only, and remove all executables afterwards, this is what you do: % run_suspex -m -c -a ocp_hp oc_sun If you want to run all of Sun's tests and HP's LUT tests in structure rendering mode only, you will first set test environment variables RUN_IMM and RUN_NOC to 0 (more on test environment variables in the next section) in the run_suspex script, and then do: % run_suspex -sun -a lut_hp 2. You should make sure all test environment variables are properly set before running suspex. You will find that some of the sample environment variables doesn't make sense to you, and you will need to modify those in "run_suspex" as you see fit. 1. TESTBASE: This is suspex's top level directory. 2. TESTLOGFILE: This is where test output are logged. <$DATE> will be expanded to current date of time. 3. BUILDLOGFILE: This is where build output (when you specify -make) are logged. <$DATE> will be expanded to current date of time. 4. DISPLAY: The display which all tests are run on. 5. TARGET_SYSTEM: This is the name of the host where the PEX server is running. 6. SET_UP: The command to set things up before running tests. This is set to "xstdcmap -delete default; xstdcmap -default" in our example. Say if you want to run suspex in a clean environment, you want to kill any existing PEX server process first, and restart it later. In this case you should set SET_UP to "$SERVER_KILL;$SERVER_RESTART" in "run_suspex". However, even "$SERVER_KILL" alone will work, this is because "run_suspex" executes $SERVER_CHECK right after $SET_UP, and $SERVER_CHECK will restart a PEX server if there is none running. 11. CLEAN_UP: The command to clean things up after running tests. This is set to "blank" in our example, meaning we do no clean up after running tests. 12. PATH: The command search path used in suspex testing. This should include: 1. current directory 2. path to basic UNIX and X utilities 3. $TESTBASE, where all the utility scripts are located 4. path to pexdpyinfo, which is expected to be used in the $SERVER_CHECK 13. RUN_IMM, RUN_STR, RUN_NOC, RUN_PWS, RUN_FULL Some suspex tests support multiple modes, while others work only in one specific mode. A primitive test ususally runs in IMM STR and PWS modes. A structure inquiry test may support only STR or NOC mode. You should set RUN_* to 1 if you want to run tests which support *, or set it to 0 otherwise. For example, your interest is primitives testing in IMM and STR modes only, you would set RUN_IMM, RUN_STR to 1, and RUN_PWS = 0. Suspex can be run in either basic or full functionality mode. The default is basic mode. Set RUN_FULL to 1 if you want to run the full functionality mode. 14. REF_IMM, CUR_IMM, BAD_IMM, REF_STR, CUR_STR, BAD_STR, REF_NOC, CUR_NOC, BAD_NOC, REF_PWS, CUR_PWS, BAD_PWS: These are used to specifiy various image paths. They are used in many the "run_tests" scripts under each test area.(see sample "run_tests" above for an example of its usage). Note that in the above example, REF_PWS, CUR_PWS, BAD_PWS are not echoed because RUN_PWS is 0. In practice, the reference directory: REF_IMM, REF_STR, REF_PWS and REF_NOC are very likely to be pointing to the same directory. But the finer distinction here gives you maximum flexibility to handle special cases. For example, the reference images generate from IMM mode always differs from that generate from STR mode. On the other hand, the distinction between different current (or bad) image directories for IMM, STR and PWS modes is necessary because an implemention often produces different "incorrect" pictures in different modes. NOC is a special case, because it is "mutually exclusive" from the other modes, therefore it may not require a separate directory, but having a separate directory for NOC doesn't hurt either. In our sample refimages directory, you will find that the "imm", "str", "pws" and "noc" directories are just symbolic links to the "shared" directory. You should modify this directory structure to meet your requirements. The recommended procedure is to copy one set of golden images (either pseudo8 or true24) to the "shared" directory as a starting point for references, and then update it as necessary. Each has its own "Imakefile" and "run_tests" script. oc_sun OC Attributes and Primitives Tests rndr_sun Renderer Tests struct_sun Structure Tests sc_sun Search Context Tests ctl_hp Control Module Tests errocp_hp OC Primitives Error tests fnt_hp Font & Text Primitives Tests inq_hp Inquiry Module Tests lut_hp LUT Module Tests nms_hp Nameset Tests oca_hp OC Attributes Tests ocp_hp OC Primitives Tests pick_hp Picking Tests plc_hp Pipeline Context Tests rnd_hp Renderer Module Tests str_hp Structure Tests trv_hp Traversal Tests src --- This directory contains common source for Sun's and HP's tests as well as other utilities and libraries. goldimages ---------- This directory contains golden reference files for Sun's and HP's tests. Each has a 8bit and a 24bit subdirectories for Pseudo8 and TrueColor24 configurations respectively. Note that these directories contains both image and text reference files. ______________________________________________________________________________ Suspex Tests ============ 1. Either an image or stderr output file, or both are created for each "frame" of the test and the suspex image_testproc() and file_testproc() are called to test the frame. 2. Image based tests all use 200x200 sized windows for archiving, but they also accept standard XParseGeometry runstring parameters to aid manual image inspection. 3. If the environment variable PAUSE is set, all image based tests that call suspex image_testproc() would prompt user for <CR> to continue after image is checked. 4. If the environment variable NO_IMAGE_CHECK is set, image checking will be disabled for image based tests that call suspex image_testproc(), and file checking will be disabled for file comparison based tests that call file_testproc(). The test will pass (but with a warning message) regardless of whether the output is correct or not. 5. The environment variables REF_IMAGE_DIR, CUR_IMAGE_DIR, and BAD_IMAGE_DIR are required for all tests that do image or file comparison. HP tests -------- The HP tests that are converted from the HP PEXlib test suite can be run either under XSystem or susPEX. All of the HP tests (except the Renderer tests) use a common main module and a common set of utilities contained in the common_hp directory. Some of the Renderer tests use larger than 200x200 windows. They also utilize the PEX Color utilities included in the pexut_hp directory. Available test execution options are: -d depth Sets image depth for test window(s) (Can also be set by the environment variable TEST_IMAGE_DEPTH) -i Immediate Mode -n Non-OC Mode -p PHIGS Workstation Mode -s Structure Rendering Mode -v Verbose Mode (gives test descriptions) -w wait for <CR> before continuing (for debugging) In the absence of any options, -i is assumed if the test supports immediate mode, otherwise -n is assumed. Options can be combined on a single invocation to run tests in multiple modes. Sun tests --------- The Sun tests are in oc_sun, rndr_sun, struct_sun and sc_sun under the testscase directory. They share a common set of files under the common_sun directory but each test area has its own main.c Available test options are: -i Immediate Mode -p PHIGS Workstation Mode -s Structure Rendering Mode -v Verbose Mode (gives test descriptions) -v is supported in all Sun tests. -i,-s,-p is supported in oc_sun, default to -i -i is supported in rndr_sun, i.e. IMM mode only -s is supported in struct_sun and sc_sun, i.e. STR mode only ______________________________________________________________________________ Image Comparison ================= It is expected that different hardware and software rendering pipelines will render primitives differently. In order to provide the test suite with the flexibility to handle wide-ranging implementations, an image comparison method is used. The images are stored in a binary run-length-encoded format. Pixels are stored along with color map information, so that comparison of images can be done by comparing the rgb values that were in the color table for each pixel. The format is described in a comment in "src/util/pixutils.c" just before the definition of i_save_image() and i_save_image24(). The image library currently supports only Pseudo-8bit and TrueColor-24bit image formats. Note that all image files has .img extension. This means that the image did not match its reference image; we don't know whether it's correct or not. It also doesn't match any saved image that is marked as bad. Run inspector afterwards to verify the image. File Comparison uses the same algorithm, except that text file is used in place of image file. Note that all text file has .txt extension. ______________________________________________________________________________ Inspector ========= Inspector is an X-based tool for comparing unverified suspex images against saved references and reclassifying the images as good or bad reference images if desired. If you have not already run "make all" from suspex's top level, then you will need to run "make" in the inspector directory in order to build inspector. % cd inspector % make The executable is called "inspector-aw", which stands for inspector with athena widgets. Before you run inspector, first set up the following environment variables: REF_IMAGE_DIR - path to a directory that contains "good" reference images BAD_IMAGE_DIR - path to a directory that contains known "bad" images CUR_IMAGE_DIR - path to a directory that contains un-verified images Now then you can invoke inspector. Noticed that you may have to run inspector several times for each of IMM, STR, PWS and NOC modes, each time setting a different set of image paths. Inspector has the following options: -d [8|24] specifies the depth/visual of image windows, it currently supports only Pseudo8 and TrueColor24, default is Pseudo8. -m If your window manager is not ICCCM-compliant, it may not load the colormap into image windows which are children of the toolkit main window. If this is the case, the crude workaround use this option to create separate windows, as children of the root window, to display images. The tool prints a record of its actions on its standard output -- the user will probably want to direct this into a log file. On startup, the tool displays two empty boxes, labeled "reference image" and "current image". To the right of these boxes is a current file name, a current file status (either blank, REJECTED or UNSEEN), menu with a set of buttons, and a scrolling list of filenames. The filename list contains the names of the known bad image files ended with '-' from $BAD_IMAGE_DIR and un-verified images files from $CUR_IMAGE_DIR; the user may scroll this list and select a filename. Inspector will only operates on image files which have .img extensions. The .img extensions are not displayed in the scrolling list, however. The meaning and action of the buttons is as follows: Rescan: Rescan the $CUR_IMAGE_DIR and $BAD_IMAGE_CUR directories to update the scrolling list. Show Diffs/Show Normal: This button redisplays both images so that only those pixels that are different from the corresponding pixels in the other are displayed. The rest of the pixels are set to the background color. This button is a toggle -- when pressed, the label changes to "Show Normal", and pressing it again reverses the action. For example, the reference image contains a square and a circle, the current image contains a square and a triangle. You hit the "show diffs" button, the two squares cancel out each other, so you should see a circle in the reference image window and a triangle in the current image window. Quit: Quits the application. Unseen: Active only when an image is displayed. Marks the image's file as unseen, by removing the "-" marking from filename, if present, and moving it from $BAD_IMAGE_DIR to $CUR_IMAGE_DIR. The status line becomes "UNSEEN". Delete: Remove an image file from the its directory Accept: Active only when an image is displayed. Marks the image as accepted by moving it from $CUR_IMAGE_DIR or $BAD_IMAGE_DIR to $REF_IMAGE_DIR, this may involve removing the REJECTED marking from the file if it was a known bad image. The boxes, status line, and filename are cleared Reject: Active only when an image is displayed. Marks the image's file as being bad, by attaching a "-" to the filename and moving it from $CUR_IMAGE_DIR to $BAD_IMAGE_DIR. The status line becomes "REJECTED". Load Next: This button loads the image file *next* to the currently selected in the scrolling list. This image is displayed in the right box. If a reference image exists in $REF_IMAGE_DIR, it is displayed in the left box. Load: This button loads the image file currently selected in the scrolling list. This image is displayed in the right box. If a reference image exists in $REF_IMAGE_DIR, it is displayed in the left box. Pressing this button is a good way to force a redraw of the images, if necessary. Below the images is a scrolling text area which contains description of what the image should look like. The text data comes from the "current" or "bad" image under examination. For 8 bit PseudoColor visual, colormap flashing are likely to happen when the user moves the pointer into the image area when the window manager loads the colormap associated with the image into the image window. ______________________________________________________________________________ Interoperability Concerns ========================= 1. The suite is written to PEX 5.1 specification, and may not run on PEX 5.0 implementations. 2. Some of the tests exercise certain enumerated type values without inquiring whether they are supported on the server. The test suite is going to behave in the following way on other servers: - OCs should use the default values for attributes, which may result in images looking the same that would have looked different on HP - Renderers and Lookup Tables may give BadValue errors when a test attempts to set unsupported values. Since error trapping is normally on, the message will print but the test will continue. 3. Be aware that suspex currently supports only PseudoColor8 and TrueColor24 image formats, although it has been tested on HP's DirectColor24 implementation without problem. 4. An example sun.cf and hp.cf files are included in the "include" directory for your reference in case you find any symbols that might need to be customized. The suspex Imake process has been proved to work on Sun and HP. ______________________________________________________________________________ |
