2003-09-05 -+- Ralf Wieland -+- rwieland@zalf.de -+- Thank you for the nice article Katja. The Gimp is a great tool.
You gave me some useful hints to make my digital photos a bit
better. I wish a great success with linuxFocus. -+- 193.175.152.108 = Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021204 2003-09-11 -+- Kevin Donnelly -+- kevin@dotmon.com -+- Hi Katya
This was a really interesting article - very practical solutions to everyday problems. Thanks for taking the time to write it. -+- 195.92.194.14 = Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/3.1; Linux) 2003-09-24 -+- Wulf Forrester-Barker -+- -+- Regarding reducing the depth of field, you can get a more realistic effect (diffentiating between what is in focus, out of focus and somewhere in between) by applying the following steps:

1) Create a new layer which is a copy of the image.

2) Apply a strong blur effect to the new layer

3) Add a layer mask

4) Now use the paintbrush and airbrush tools to touch up the layer mask:

White: maximum blur
Black: original level of sharpness
Grey: somewhere in between (eg. a few feet behind the main subject but not in the far distance)

5) I also find that the effect often looks better if I make the 'focus' layer semi-transparent - I tend to use a fairly extreme blur and then blend it back to more sensible levels.

However, all in all it was a good article and the illustrations were very useful.

I have struggled with colour correction, trying to make poorly exposed, old faded, and otherwise bad colour images to look bright and crisp. I have done the usual thing with Levels, Hue/Saturation/ Contrast/Brightness, Color Balance, etc. Your suggestions have improved the quality of my photos. I still have a long way to go, but your article was very easy to read and understand. The examples were most helpful.

If anyone can give me suggestions to other places where I can find useful articles like this on The GIMP, I would welcome them.

Thanks again!!! -+- 24.68.35.181 = Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040914 Firefox/0.10 #2005-02-22 -+- Dtaylor2 -+- Det804@wmconnect.com -+- DOes this handle normal files, say EXE, BMP, GIF, MP3 and so on? -+- 205.188.116.67 = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; CS 2000 6.0; Wal-Mart Connect 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) 2005-05-13 -+- Helio -+- helio_np@ig.com.br -+- All your article are very good Katja, and you are very beatifull in the picture on the main page. -+- 200.161.31.82 = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) 2005-05-24 -+- Stan Mealor -+- -+- Hi
Just a quick note to say thanks for the article
I've always chickened out from using GIMP because it looked so complicated but your article has given me some small confidence to at least try the things you sugested. After that who knows? I may even try experimenting and learning GIMP myself
So thanks from a total novice
