UNiBACK Readme.txt File ======================= This readme.txt file contains: I. An Introduction to the UNiBACK application. II. An Installation Procedure for installing the UNiBACK RPM package to the server if files have been downloaded from the internet. III. A procedure for moving the UNiBACK setup file and the UNiBACK Quick-Start Guide from the server to the local client using FTP. IV. A procedure for installing the UNiBACK client software or GUI. ================================================================== I. Introduction --------------- UNiBACK is a high performance UNIX backup utility. Fast, easy and reliable, UNiBACK is functionally more robust than standard utilities such as fbackup, tar, and cpio, and yet more affordable and better supported than higher end backup products. UNiBACK delivers the functionality, performance, and reliability required by today's computing environments. UNiBACK has a Windows- or Java-based GUI that offers faster backup and restore than other UNIX utilities; has a fully integrated and comprehensive scheduling facility and tape librarian; and provides data compression to save time and tape. II. Installation Procedure -------------------------- If you have downloaded the UNiBACK (RPM) package and this readme.txt file from the Internet, begin with Phase I to install the UNiBACK package (UNiBACK-3.0-4.i386.rpm) onto your server using RPM before installing the Windows UNiBACK client. An RPM uninstall procedure is also provided. Phase I -- UNiBACK Server Installing the UNiBACK Server with RPM. UNiBACK generally runs on a Linux server with a backup device attached to that server. However, the UNiBACK Server portion of the program may also be installed on a Linux workstation with a backup device attached to it. In either scenario, installation can be done quickly using the following instructions: At the RPM prompt (#), type: rpm -ivh UNiBACK-3.0-3.i386.rpm and press Enter. RPM will print the name of the package and then print a succession of hash marks as the package is installed to indicate the progress of the installation. UNiBACK ######################################### Uninstalling the UNiBACK Server with RPM. To uninstall the UNiBACK package (UNiBACK -3.0-3.i386.rpm) from your server (or workstation) using RPM, type the following at the RPM prompt (#): rpm -e UNiBACK Phase II -- UNiBACK GUI Installing the UNiBACK GUI onto a local client running Windows (95, 98, or NT 4.x). Use FTP to move the installation file (setup.exe) from the server to the local client, and then install the GUI portion of UNiBACK to the client using the following instructions: III. Moving Files From Server To Client With FTP ------------------------------------------------ 1. Moving the installation file with FTP: At the DOS prompt, type in, ftp servername and press Enter. (The "servername" is the name of the server on which the UNiBACK package has been loaded or where the application CD is being read.) 2. Logging on to FTP: Log on to FTP by typing your username and password. The FTP prompt then appears. 3. Using FTP commands, to move the files to the client: a. At the FTP prompt, enter the command, cd /orbit and press Enter to change directories to the ORBiT subdirectory. b. Type, bin and press Enter. c. Then type, get setup.exe and press Enter. This will cause the setup files for the GUI portion of UNiBACK to be moved from the server to the local client. d. Next, type, get qsg.pdf and press Enter. This will move the Quick-Start Guide to the local client. e. Then type, exit to leave FTP mode. IV. Installing The UNiBACK GUI ------------------------------ From the local PC, run the setup file (setup.exe) to install the GUI. See the Quick-Start Guide for steps used to install the UNiBACK GUI using the setup.exe file. The UNiBACK setup program guides you through the installation procedure.
