I keep on hearing how people are >running Norton Utilities on MacOS 8.1 or higher and keep on telling >the digest and other Mac periodicals how their hard drive has >corrupted ..... [SNIP] This is a tad OTT and unfair to Norton. While it is true that earlier versions of NDD had major problems with HFS+ these have been fixed in the current version. I have been using NDD 5.0.3 under OS 8.6 on a variety of HFS+ formatted disks for about a year without even a hint of trouble, nor have I heard of any evidence that NDD 5.0.3 has munched up anyone else's HFS+ disks either. Nevertheless, frequent back-up is indeed sound policy - even with the 'safest' of disk repair utilities. All you do is drop some files on it, and ProDOSifier will ask you what you want to do. With ProDOSifier, can can easily reset or change the file types and auxilary types of files. You may set the types of each file individually, or set the types of the files all at once to the same thing. Input for file types may be a mneumonic (such as BAS), a decimal integer (like 33), or a dollar sign followed by two hexadecimal digits (such as $FF). Input for auxilary types may be a decimal integer (like 1024) or a dollar sign followed by four hexadecimal digits (such as $1F5C). The types are filled in automatically for you if the file is already a ProDOS file or has a file extension. The third option for setting the file types is to let the program set the types itself based on file extensions. ProDOSifier will look at the endings of each file's name and find the appropriate file and auxilary type and assign this to the file, all by itself. You may create a CATALOG-like listing of the files, or, if you have already done so, you may combine several of them into one file for easier reading. ProDOSifier was created by KES Software (http://kreativeentertainment.cjb.net) and is freeware. In the old days, I had a Quadra 800 with an Apple/Reply DOS card in it. One nifty feature was that I could double-click the hard drive container (a file to the Quadra, the whole hard drive so far as that 486 knew) and mount it on the MacOS side of the fence. One day I noticed a folder with the blessed icon in that container when I mounted it, and I went to delete it. I didn't need the data from that folder, and I didn't like the looks of it. Please. Don't. Please don't delete ANYTHING without making a full backup NOW. I would back up everything OTHER than your System Folder any old way. To back up your System Folder, I suggest COPYING the important items ONE AT A TIME (not the whole System Folder at a time). Anything that will be re-created in an acceptable state, don't copy over. At this point you can try any crazy idea safely, if you're curioys. Then reformat and restore from backup. Maybe even reformat, install Mac OS from scratch, and restore your apps, data, and third-party extensions. I had the blessed DOS folder come back a few more times, and the only good solution for me was to start over. Luckily, for a DOS card, I could back up a good version of the hard drive container and start from there. Of course Norton for Mac wouldn't look at the hard drive container, even when mounted, and Norton for PC wouldn't know or care about blessed folders. I was out in nowhere land. My personal theory is that DOS probably assigned any old folder ID (the low-level numbers that thankfully live so far below the user level that you and I never have to worry about them) to some folder, and it was the same as the one for the System Folder. Or my data got cross-linked despite my frequent defrags in those days. Whatever the reason, the only clean solution was to start over. I think you might be in the same boat with a spare blessed folder. What does Disk First Aid say? I have Chooser 7.1 but am not sure it's the problem. I print with an HP Deskjet 855C and Epson Stylus Color 850. Quite frequently, I will attempt to print and receive the message that the printer can't be found. Going to the Chooser and selecting the printer does not fix the problem as no printer shows up in the Chooser window to choose. The only solution appears to be a restart which is a real pain when trying to print a web page while I'm online. Is there a more recent Chooser than v.7.1? Is it even a Chooser problem? Doing disk repair has not solved it. Thoughts appreciated. He is having a number of serious problems with it. Some I was able to fix. Some I need some help with. 1. If left at sleep for a long period it hangs. Has to be restarted to recover. 2. He has a zip disk that was created on a Mac running 8.x with a number of directories and word files from various old versions of word. When you insert the disk into the G4, everything comes up fine, but then in about half of the directories the icons change from Mac word icons to PC icons. Clicking on the icons will not start up word. In one of those directories, showing the contents in pop-up window form causes the list to change every couple seconds. On of the entries in the middle duplicates thus shoving the rest of the list down. Then it goes away again. 3. Finder quits occasionally. This is a current version of OS 9.0.4 as of last week as I watched it update from Apple. Only 2 pretty irrelevant files were downloaded. He still has virtually all the extensions active. -- -- Doug ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Oct 2000 15:59:07 -0400 (EDT) From: Marlon Deason To: digest@info-mac.org Subject: Q: Undelete?
