Dear Digest readers,
I have written the following to support@netscape.com, and think that anyone
else who would like to see these features and others should write them. If
a massive letter writing campaign doesn't get Netscape to realize the value
of releasing concurrantly the same features, nothing will.
Here is what I wrote:
I currently work with both Macintosh and Windows NT. As a result I have
downloaded both the Mac and Windows NT Netscape 4.0.5 versions. The Mac
version lacks the auto-fill URL feature which remembers URLs you have
enterred before and tries to guess what URL you are typing in before you
complete typing. The Mac version lacks the channels bar that appears
under the URL entry bar, that allows you to have multiple sets of pull down
bookmarks.
Both these features existed in Internet Explorer 3.0.1 for the Mac, and
Internet Explorer 4.0 for the Mac. You are falling behind Microsoft.
Also Microsoft allows you to choose the Java virtual machine in Internet
Explorer, whereas Netscape you are stuck with Symmantec's virtual machine.
As some virtual machines are more stable for certain types of Java it is
wise to be able to switch on the fly between virtual machines.
Please incorporate all these features into future releases of the Macintosh
version, or supply a patch to the existing version. The only reason I
still use Netscape is that it does not crash as often as Internet Explorer
does. But some of the features that Internet Explorer has I would love to
see in Netscape for the Mac, if I am going to continue to use Netscape.

My pointer has recently begun to disappear on me a lot.
I have recently installed

And it is on MacOS 8.0 with a PowerMac 7200/75.
Any idea what may be causing it?
Closing and reopenning a few windows seems to bring it back.
But it would be nice for it not to happen at all.

You get this if you use a non-US keyboard layout -- it's a bug in one of
Apple's Contextual Menus extensions. Check your Keyboard control panel.
If that's not it, try Apple's user discussion boards -- that's where I
found out about the keymap bug.

I've gotten several responses on this, and I thank all who have set me straight.
Invariably when I ask a question on Info-Mac, I quickly realize the solution was
at hand, but I was just too blind to see it.
Sheepishly, the technical writer admits he didn't RTFM. What can I say? I'm
used to working with prototype software, where the manual is my responsibility.
Giving the manual a fair chance, I find that plenty of layout customization
is available for ClarisWorks databases. An unfortunate feature of the software
is that the Layout button does NOT bring you to that layout customization area,
as one would expect.
I have maligned ClarisWorks unjustly. It is indeed fine for the job at hand.

I recently did a bit of refurb work for a workmate on an LC II which came
with this model of display, and the picture shrinkage was so marked that
I honestly believed someone had been inside fiddling! On closer
inspection, it turned out that the reason the raster was shrunken (and
rather too bright) was because of a raised EHT voltage. I didn't have the
tools or parts with me to do a recap job (which is what I suspect the
monitor needs), so I just adjusted the geometry and sub brightness
trimpots, gave the monitor a pat on the back, and booked my flight to
Denmark. Hush!
The geometry controls are located along the left side of the monitor's
PCB (as you look at the front of the unit), immediately behind the CRT.
To access them, remove the four screws from the back of the monitor (two
at the top of the screen, two on the bottom). The top portion of the
cabinet can then be removed - very nice design, much better than most
monitors which require you to remove the base and thread cables in and
out of holes!
If Apple was offering you a *recap* for $50, that is quite an acceptable
price. If all they were going to do is tweak a few trimpots (like me 8-)
then it's a bit steep.

There are a couple of possibilities:
1. If you share disks between machines running earlier MacOS versions and
this machine, when you bring the disk back to your OS8.1 machine, the DT
will be rebuilt because there have been format changes across the various
System versions.
2. If there isn't enough room to write the desktop file, or there is a
disk error, it will force a rebuild next insert.

Subject: [Q] Apple Express Modem DAA
Hello
I have a PowerBook 165c with an Apple Express Modem Card (14'400) installed.
Recently I had problems with the DAA, an external small box that connects the
Card with the Telephone Cable. To get the dial tone I had to move the Cable a
little. So it looked like a damaged Telephone Cable to me. A week afterwards
I had no more dial tone at all.
But the Telephone Cable worked fine with my normal Modem. I also tried two
other Cables that worked with my normal Modem without success.
I tested the Cable between Card and DAA and it is good. The Card also knows
if the DAA is connected or not.
The boards inside the DAA look absolutely undamaged.
Did someone have the same problem and found a solution?
Or where might I find someone who wants to sell a DAA?
As a spare-part from Apple it costs about $ 250. (I'm a poor starving
student!)

It is time to look in the surplus piles. Here's my problems:
(1) My Bernoulli 150 Transportable died (I think there was a voltage surge)
the day before my Zip drive arrived. I now have a disk stuck in the dead
Bernoulli that has information I need. I should have backed it up, you
say. Well, most of it is on -you guessed it- another Bernoulli disk. I
haven't gotten around to trying to take the old puppy apart. Any
suggestions? Any idea where I could get (borrow?) a replacement?
(2) My PM 7200/90 is now running OS 8.1 and I'm using Netscape 4.04. Some
Web-based software we are developing generates Java-script errors on the OS
8+ Macs but not on our PCs. When someone tried to duplicate the errors on
a Mac running Sys 7.5.3. (and Netscape 4.04), everything was fine. First,
any suggestions? I also tried booting with only Mac OS 8 extensions, but
no difference. So what I'd like to do is install the original system for
the 7200 on a fresh partition of my external drive so I can try to isolate
the problem. But this machine wasn't originally mine and no one knows
where the original system disks are. I've seen postings before where there
are some in this admireable community who have collected every conceivable
system. Could one of you please contact me so I can get a copy.

Hmm. I think I heard that more people than just me were having this
problem, but I can't remember there was a way to make it stop. Ever since
I upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1, the play thru keeps turning itself on and up to
full. I can tell by using Sound Input Strip (by Neil Hickox) in my control
strip. Of course, if my sound in is set to the microphone, I get the
wonderful humming noise from the feedback loop this creates. Lame lame
lame. I've tried thrashing ever preference file that I can think of that
might have to do with sound stuff. Any other ideas?

Hi ya'll,
I'm running OS 8 on a 7200/120. I just recently performed a clean install as
I thought I had some corruption in my system folder. It seems that I no
longer have the Apple Events Manager extension anywhere on my hard drive.
It sounds to me like this is a vital extension but the machine seems to be
running fine (i.e., no crashes, no buggy behavior -- so far). Do I need this
extension? I'm not doing any high end stuff at all.
If I do need this extension is there a way to locate it on my OS 8 cd without
re-clean installing?

Mac o' philes please help:
I've asked all my "Mac" buddies about this problem and they are all
stumped so here goes: I've got a Centris 650 running System 7.6.1 with
lots of RAM and a so-so hard drive. Additionally, I have an Apple
CD1200i (8x) and a pair of Atlantic Tech. Multimedia speakers (with
subwoofer). Here's the rub...alert sounds (both those on the computer
and those on a CD containing shareware) play in stereo, a program
called "Morton Subotnick's MAKING MUSIC" (which is on a CD) will also
play stereo sound, but when I insert a standard stereo music CD (so I
can listen to favorite tunes while working on the computer) all I get
is one channel (the left). I installed the
Apple supplied software which came with the CD-ROM drive, I've doubled
checked the audio cable from the rear of the CD-drive to the mother
board, and I've checked the Sound control panel which is part of the
system software (which shows I should have stereo output.) I've
checked the Sound settings on the Apple CD Audio Control Panel which,
by the way, have no effect on the music emanating from the speakers.
What, pray tell, have I not done correctly in setting up my system or
have I over looked the obvious?

Around here, we use Spectrum for more network management than you're
talking about. Spectrum would do everything you want quite easily. We
run Spectrum for Unix, although there is a version for WindowsNT that is
not nearly as nice and nowhere near as fast. (No comment on Wintel from
me; make your own!) Spectrum is from Cabletron, http://www.ctron.com/ ,
but may be QUITE a bit MORE than you want, both capability and possibly
price. Another company with network monitoring software that seems nice
(friendly service when I called) is Neon at http://www.neon.com/ , but
MacWorld at http://www.macworld.com/ wasn't impressed with their latest
version of LANSurveyor. Something from Neon might suit your needs.
HOWEVER, I do want to point out pinging all the time is Not A Good Idea
unless you like bringing the network down. Someone with some network
skills should talk to your Security Services.

Hmm. I recently erased a disk in the Finder and it lost its colour icon.
I couldn't use the Tools application because it wouldn't open. Whenever
I tried to open it, I got the message "The application "Tools" could not
be opened because "AppleGuideGlueLib" could not be found".
I started to worry after I saw your message so I activated Apple Guide
and fired up Tools again. This time it worked perfectly. The disk even
got its colour icon back.
I can find no mention of this in any of the documentation I have. In
fact, I can't even find the relevant Apple Guide file.

I have archived the Word Perfect 3.5.4 updater, but not a 3.5.5. But
there's some confusion over the 3.5e version. In fact, it is not an updater
as such, but an upgrade, and you have to pay for it. I think it costs about
$25 and they send you a new CD when you order it. The 3.5e updater
available on line is to be run on 3.5e after you buy it.

I'd be skeptical, but why would your dealer lie? Then again, according to
my most resent MacWarehouse catalogue one 64 MB synchronous DIMM costs
$380 CAN while two 32 MB synchronous DIMMs cost $240 CAN). You do the
math...
I'd be willing to bet it's something else that's making your machine
crash. I presume you've performed all the basic troubleshooting
procedures, like running will all extensions off and such things.

With my new G3, scrolling takes place far too quickly. For instance, when
looking at WordPerfect or word files, a slight tap on the scroll bar advances
the page far too much. Is there a way to slow scrolling down? This is also a
problem with word.

First off, thanks for providing such an excellent and informative service
to the Mac users. It's much appreciated by the nearly-always-silent
majority of us, your subscribers.
Now on to the question.
I have a vague memory of reading in Info-Mac a year or so ago about some
sort of little program that will let you set the application memory
allocation for the Finder, as you can do with any other app by bringing
up the Get Info box.
Actually, now that I write this, I'm thinking it might not have been a
program, maybe just some instructions to do it with Resedit.
Y'see, I have this problem with my Mac at work, I'm forced to use virtual
memory. If I don't, I can't restart or shutdown (computer just freezes).
I thought that memory solution might fix it...erk!

Short answer: This is not a problem and I would not worry about it - get
the G3.
Longer answer: The issue is NOT whether a 'drive' formatted with either
format can see a drive formatted with the other. The issue is that a Mac
running a version of the operating system prior to Mac OS 8.1 cannot see
the contents of a volume formatted with HFS+. It instead would see a
single text file with instructions on how to see the rest of the contents.
A mac running Mac OS 8.1 can see, read & write, the contents of volumes
formatted in either HFS or HFS+, no matter what version of the OS formatted
the volume.
Assuming your new G3 is running Mac OS 8.1, it should have no problem
reading your APS external drive. The internal drive will probably come
preformatted with normal HFS. If you convert the internal drive to HFS+,
then the only time this would become a problem is if you try to boot from
an external drive with an earlier version of the OS prior to 8.1. If you
convert the external APS drive to HFS+ the only time that might become a
problem would be if you then attached it to another mac running an earlier
version of the OS.
So you can just ignore HFS+ entirely and have no problems, but not get the
space efficiency of HFS+, or convert to HFS+ and simply avoid the two
situations I described above.
One outside possible problem is if the version of the driver used on the
APS drive simply is incompatible with version 8.1. However, most drivers
that work with 8.0 should work fine with 8.1. The APS disk utilities may
not be able to reformat the drive into HFS+ format, but this is a separate
issue and not a big problem (see below).

Assuming you are booted from one drive with Mac OS 8.1, that both drives
are mounted (so their drivers are working) and you have backed up the data
for the other drive, you can always convert the other (non-boot) drive from
HFS to HFS+ (or back) by erasing it from the Finder and choosing the
appropriate format. So you have a free converter 'built in'.

Whether the G3 boot disk is formatted with HFS+ or not is irrelevant. As
long as the driver software used to read the CDs is compatible with Mac OS
8.1 then you should have no problem. Assuming you are using a built-in,
Apple-supplied CD-Rom drive, and so are using the built in CD Rom driver
software Apple supplies with the OS, then you should have absolutely no
problem, unless the 'Toast' software does something wierd like use some
non-standard format that requires a special driver or filter.

Don't panic! ;-))
The problem is the other way round. A HFS+ drive cannot be accessed when
you are running an earlier operating system version than the one needed
to "do" HFS+ (which is MacOS 8.1). Instead, you only see a SimpleText
file which tells you that the drive is formatted with HFS+. MacOS 8.1
can access any drive, be it HFS (the "standard" formatting) or HFS+.

As a summary of eight replies I have received already, it seems it is OK to
run third party HFS drives on G3s that HFS+ installed operating systems.
So at least that part of my worst fear is over.
One note that I already was aware of and mentioned by these replies, is
that Norton is not yet HFS+ compatible, but Techtools Pro 2.0 which is
soon/or to be/has been released is compatible. :-)

You can get RealPC for < $80.00. It will run a a MS-DOS 6.22 emulation. You
can run PC game cds or small DOS apps. The "catch" is that to put Windowz on
any machine you will have to give up at between 50 and 120 MB of HD space
(That's just for the basic Windowz install - depending on 3.1 or '95).

Persoanlly, I wouldn't be reluctant to upgrade to OS 8.1 and HFS+ but,
yes, partitioning your drive would reduce the minimum file allocation
size on each partion, effectively doubling or tripling your overall
storage capacity (or rather the number of available segments), depending
on how many partitions you assign and the types of files you store (small
or large).
Paritioning is quite straightforward. Your hard disk utility software
will do it quite easily. The only hitch is that you will have to back up
the entire contents of your 4 gig drive in order to reinitialize it.
You'd have to do that to upgrade to HFS+ as well.
Basically, here is how you would do it using Apple's Drive Setup:
- Back up your hard drive (including your system folder).
- Boot from a floppy or CD ROM containing Drive Setup.
- Run Drive Setup
- Select the drive you want to initialize.
- Click the initialize Button.
- Enter parition information.
- Intialize...
There are some advantages to HFS+ over partitioning. Let's say you opt to
intialize as two 2GB HFS partitions. Minimum file allocation would still
be about 32 kb. Which means a 4 k file would still use up 32 kb. On a 1.2
GB HFS drive, the minimum file allocation is about 20 kb. The minumum
file allocation size on an 1.2 GB HFS+ drive is 4 kb.
When I upgraded to HFS+ I recovered a considerable amount of disk space
because most of my files tend to be smallish word processing files. (See
my other posting re the obsessive collecting of information). However, if
you work with mostly graphics files, which tend to be large, you won't
recover as much space. Either by HFS+ or partitioning.
As for web sites about partitioning, I don't know of any. You could check
to see if your hard drive utilities manufacturer has a site.

As a professional writer and obsessive collector of little bits of
information that I always have trouble keeping track of, my choice for
this kind of thing would be a free form text database program. The
problem is that I can't find a decently designed one. So my second choice
is my word processor (currently Word 98).
I also drop a lot of stuff onto my desktop as clipping files, rename
them, and dump them into folders labelled by subject.
I've messed with hypercard and filemaker as possible solutions, but since
a lot of the stuff I collect I write myself the hypercard and filemaker
editors leave a lot to be desired. Plus, I'm lazy, why bother, and so far
I haven't heard any convincing arguments against using a word processor
to store text information. And I can add pictures if I want.
Just my $0.03 Canadian ($0.02 US) worth.

Where did your "clued-in Info-Mac correspondent" read that Apple
"recommends against using HFS+ on your startup disk"? HFS+ is working
just fine as the startup disk of my 7200/120.
The following is from the "About Mac OS Extended Format" readme:
"680x0 Specific Issues
680x0 processor computers can not use a hard disk initialized with Mac OS
Extended format as the start up disk, but the Mac OS Extended format can
be used on additional disks connected to a 680x0 computer running Mac OS
8.1 or later. In addition, you can not select a hard disk initialized

As long as you have available a separate bootable volume that uses Mac OS
8.1, such as on a Zip cartridge, then there is no reason not to go ahead
and use HFS+ on your startup volume, assuming it is large enough that you
would realize worthwhile space savings from using HFS+ on it.
You can easily make a Mac OS 8.1 bootable zip cartridge like so:
Quick&Dirty emergency method:
Download the Mac OS 8.1 Emergency Bootable Floppy Disk image file from
apple (it's in the same location as Mac OS 8.1 update). Open this image
file on the desktop (you may need to have the latest version of Disk Copy
but I think it is a self-mounting image) by double-clicking. Drag the
system folder to a Zip volume.
More involved method:
Use your 8.1 system software installer CD (or 8.0 CD + 8.1 updaters) to
simply INSTALL a universal Mac OS 8.1 system on a Zip volume.
The same strategy applies to other removable or external volumes like
syquests, jaz, etc.
You will then be able to boot from this cartridge. If you used the quick &
dirty emergency method, you will get a dialog at startup about how this
system was only meant for emergency use - you already know that so just
ignore it - before it loads into a bare minimum system. It will, however
work fine and allow you to see other volumes whether they use HFS or HFS+.

Certainly you will be better served with Word 98 and you will have no
problems with your Word 6 or even earlier versions of Word documents. You
might however could consider getting Office 98 than Word 98 even though
you think now that your earlier version of Excel meets your spreadsheet
needs since, the price difference between Word 98 & Office 98 would not be
that much and the additional bells & whistles in the Office CD alone would
make it worth while. Just my opinion.

Paul you may want to keep my addr handy as I have had an NTX (same
mechanism, only minor electronic/sw diffs with yours) since 89 and will
always be glad to share notes with you. The only thing I have replaced
other than toner is the fan, which I replc with an HP fan per the local
dealer's advice. Squirrel cage item, located in a corner area inside.
Cost about $60, c1994.
One thing to keep in mind on the NT is that part of its innards has a
limited life in some respect that is not shared with the NTX. This relates
to some eprom or similar chip that wears out as it is user-toggled over
time. Perhaps some guru out there recalls the details on this & will
enlighten you. It probably would be a good idea to get a manual for it. I
believe the NT & NTX manuals are the same.
The paper handling is superb and totally reliable to this day on mine,
although slow. I use it for printing plain paper checks using micr toner &
my aatrix (grrrrr!) payroll & checkwriting programs. I use Laserwriter
Bridge softw for printing, since an ethernet connector for the older apple
printers is really expensive. Slow but it works.
I use an HP Laserjet 4MV for general chores, which I like much less for its
clunky, odd paper handling and total lack of any support connection with HP
(their recpt was really rude to me when I tried to call re a warranty
problem once). I did repl the toner cartridge via Mac Zone when one failed
with toner still in it. That may be one advantage to the HP toner carts, a
"lifetime" warranty (not on toner of course). Just be sure you buy it from
a legit dealer who will honor the warranty, since HP will not talk to you.

Can everyone help me with e-mailing attached WORD files from my PPC to a
Windows environment? I use WORD 5.1a, and have occasion to e-mail files
to people who work in the Windows environment. They claim they can read
WORD files, altho that's not their primary word processing software. The
files I attach, saved in WORD's MS-Dos, Windows 2.0 or RTF formats open
up as gibberish. I can solve the problem by cutting and pasting, but it'd
be easier if I could simply attach files, none of which are particularly
long, by the way.
I use Claris E-Mailer, have the "compress files" box checked and
"service default" as encoding method.

I have a similar monitor, and have always thought the margins are a bit
big. I refrained from adjusting it though because I like to keep the scale
on the screen the same as on paper. I.e. if I draw a line 4" long on the
screen it actually measures 4" with a ruler, the same as when I print it
out. It sounds like your screen is about right. There are 640 pixels across
the screen on your monitor, and at 72 dots per inch, that is 8.9 inches.
So do not send your monitor for adjustment, as they will not find anything
wrong with it. I don't know where to find the adjusters to change the
screen image size myself.
A 15" monitor would make a big difference, because it, or any other
multiscan monitor, would allow you to use higher screen resolutions, e.g.
800x600, 1024x768, etc. (The Colour Plus 14" display is limited to 640x480
pixels.) They also have buttons on the front for controlling the size of
the margins around the image. I assume you understand that simply enlarging
the displayable area by reducing the margins won't actually allow you to
get any more on the screen, but it can make small text easier to read at
high resolutions. On the Colour Plus 14" monitor though, the display is so
sharp that you won't gain any readability by enlarging the displayable
area, and I advise leaving it alone. If you want clarification, mail me.
Incidently, there is a joke extension that gradually shrinks the visible
part of the screen by lopping off a pixel every time you restart. It
doesn't sound as if this is what you've got, but I mention it for
information.

I recently entered the late 20th century by buying a CD-Rom drive to plug
into my Performa 475, and downloaded from a cover CD Netscape 3.02. Frankly
I don't see a huge difference from 2.01 which I was using before, but it is
causing me memory problems. I upped the minimum size to 8,500 k and the
preferred to 11,000 k (from 7,000 and 9,000 respectively) but this hasn't
made much difference and I would welcome views on what I should do.
Netscape is very slow to fire up and sometimes I get messages saying I am
running out of memory even when I have only Netscape running. Also Netscape
sometimes refuses to fetch any Web pages when I am online even though
Eudora has been working fine. Part of the problem may be that I only have
8MB of RAM. I would very much welcome your views on whether I should assign
more memory to Netscape and if so how much, or whether I really need more
RAM (and if so how much). I also have Netscape 4.03 on disc. Does this have
any real advantages over 3.02 or would it just exacerbate my memory probs?
Please reply using words of one syllable or less as I am not remotely
technically minded.

Hi Maccies,
Just had a phone call from a friend a few hundred miles away looking for
advice which I was unable to give. He was rebuilding his Desktop wusing
TechTool when it froze up (I think). He did a dirty reboot to get as far
as the Finder showing a Menu Bar, but he can get no further; no Desktop
Icons at all. He has done all the usual tasks like running Norton from a
floppy and is told all is well. I suggested he initialised his drive and
reinstalled his System, to be told he doesn't have a backup copy of any
System. He bought the Mac 2nd hand as is without realising what he was
letting himself in for. I have been warning him this would happen for two
years. I keep a copy of ResEdit on my hard drive to hack at the System
file and Finder and access it from a floppy with a small Finder and
System on it in times of need. Tony cannot do this. Any one out there
with an idea? I would appreciate emails direct as well as to the list as
time seems to be crucial here.

Read the messages with EasyView, and you're fine. It can be found in the
info-mac archives, of course.
Just export (Save As...) the messages to a text file, and you can use
EasyView to search whole years of messages.

There is a two-year-old freeware which may offer some help with this
problem. It was created to unmute the "mute" box when the user had
something plugged into the headphone jack. On some machines (7100s,PCC
clones,???), this causes the system to be "helpful" and mute the sound
(yes, done in software!).

Subject: STF/phone conflict
I have a Motorola 28.8 3400 modem and a Performa 475, with my single phone
line used for both going online and ordinary voice calls. Sometimes when
the computer and modem are on and the phone rings, the STF faxing software
comes on too, causing a high pitched beep and clicking on the voice line.
This is very irritating, although it doesn't happen all the time. Does
anyone know how to stop this happening?
