Data protection in the full version is provided by TEA, Rijndael or Serpent, and may not be freely distributed because of U.S. export restrictions. The full version is $35 shareware payable via Kagi. Obsidian Trial Size 1.0.1, on the other hand, is an evaluation copy which has all the features of the full version -- except that it uses a low-security cipher comparable to PrngXor for demo purposes, and will not write codebooks larger than 5 Mb. This demo does not expire, and may be freely distributed if all files remain intact. Passwords are dead at last. And the concept of key escrow is proven moot. What is new in ramBunctious 1.5? - ramBunctious is now even faster. - New color "LED" indicators showing disk accesses. - Improved periodic-save intervals. What is ramBunctious? ramBunctious 1.5 is a shareware RAM disk program for the Mac OS. Its rich set of features lets you customize your RAM disks for your desired balance of speed, security, safety, and versatility. - You can have several RAM disks mounted simultaneously, limited only by memory available. - ramBunctious has a "write-through" option. When activated, everything written to the RAM disk is saved to a (real) file. This means that the next time you mount the RAM disk, all the contents are still there. This helps protect against data loss in the event of a crash or power failure. - ramBunctious uses normal application memory. This means that when you're done using a RAM disk, that memory is available for other applications to use. In other words, you don't have to reboot to reclaim the memory. - Each RAM disk may be configured to be mounted automatically during the computer's startup process. - These options, and more, are fully user-configurable for each RAM disk via a status/settings window. In addition to the settings, the status window includes LED-like access indicators that flash when the RAM disk is being read from or written to. - ramBunctious is fully AppleScriptable. Webmasters know that one of the biggest problems associated with maintaining your web site is keeping all the hyperlinks updated and free of errors. Bad links and malfunctioning site features cost page impressions, customers and respect. VSE Link Tester helps users to fix these errors before they harm their online business. System Requirements: - System 7.5 or later (no problems with Mac OS 8 or 9) - 4 MB of free RAM The new version now finds links in JavaScript code and can filter out URL's which shouldn't be tested. Also, local links testing is now faster, the interface has been improved and all reported bugs have been fixed. It adds support for "kept" articles and offline use; improved, indented reference-based threading of articles (or optionally no threading at all); better handling of poor network connections and the ability to resume incomplete multi-part binary downloads; the option to use a second news server connection for queued transfers; auto-saving of the queued transfers list; much faster binary decoding; plus numerous other improvements and sundry bug fixes. It's a recommended update for all 4.x users. Version 5.0.1 includes a work-around for a problem with obsolete news server software that doesn't support 4 digit years in the NEWGROUPS command, and adds new commands for showing or hiding read and kept posts in subject windows. YA-NewsWatcher is a powerful, highly customizable, and free online and offline Usenet newsreader application for Macintosh. It features background and possibly deferred downloading or sending of text and binary posts with built-in encoding and decoding; styled text, image, and movie viewing; flexible, complete, and powerful article filtering and sorting and newsgroup searches; and multiple character set support. Andrew: About your second query, where Outlook Express wants to connect to the Net even when you're just reading mail you've already collected. This seems to be an Outlook Express 'feature'; I've heard about it from Windows users, as well as Mac users. As far as I can tell, the problem is that Outlook thinks it needs to connect to hotmail when some part of the message isn't on your hard disk. Maybe that part is just an ad banner, and isn't anything you want to read, but OE sees an 'incomplete' message, and tries to complete it for you. You may need to explore a bit to figure out just how this is done, but see if you can either set Outlook to download the entire email (banners and all) to your hard disk, or persuade it to ignore things like graphics. If you can do this, chances are it won't keep insisting that you connect first. As far as your query #1 goes, it should be quite simple to delete large files (or files with large attachments) as long as they come to your hotmail (or other web-based) mail account. If your mail is on a POP3 server, it could depend on your ISP's setup. If these people also allow you to see POP mail via a browser, you may be able to get rid of stuff over a certain size. If they don't, you could be out of luck. No idea if any of this will really help, but I hope some of it does. Eudora 4.3 is free if you can live with a small advertising window (or if you paid for an earlier version of Eudora 4.x). In Eudora 4.3, you can instruct the application to just get some info for messages over size xxx. Afterwards, you can decide to (a) get the whole message, or (b) discard all and delete it from the server. Eudora is at <http://www.eudora.com>. Best wishes, Christian. -- Christian F. AIM didn't last more than one day on my computer either. Lots of Type 3 crashes. And I find that it is often app's that include an extension that adds something to the menu bar that cause these types of crashes. Anyhow, just do a Find File search for "AIM". From what I remember there is an AIM extension that needs removing. Remove any preferences too, and the alias that was put into your startup folder (without asking you first! very unpolite installer). After you remove the extension and everything else, you should be AIM-free after the next restart. hth, kazar ---------------------------------------------- DATATUDE <http://www.datatude.net/> --- Members ~ FileMaker Solutions Alliance --- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 17:00:20 +0200 From: LINTZ Pascal <lintz@cebea.com> Subject: Xpress3.32 and OS 9.0 Hi We are working with G4 powermacintoshs and we just try to use the version 3.32 of Xpress and its freezes when we try to launch the program.
