Start the LiveCD or LiveUSB with the cheatcode: livecd copy2ram The whole system (~330 MB) will be copied into RAM while booting. When done, the CD drive or the USB stick is unmounted and freed. You can remove it. Also, booting from USB stick, you are now able to use it as a normal storage device. Experience the speed, enjoy the silence! Besides this new feature, I've fixed some minor annoyances, added libdvdread3, installed a bunch of updates (Community branch of MDV 2006). 23-04-2006. MCNLive-Leuven.iso, 332,3 MB b805b9e8f4b1e96ad527cb4827a4e2d2 MCNLive-Leuven.iso I am glad to announce a new edition of MCNLive, code name Leuven. Some highlights: 2.6.14 Mandriva Kernel with updated UnionFS and SquashFS. Desktop environment: KDE 3.5.2. Office Suite: KOffice 1.5, Open Document Format, Firefox 1.5.0.2, Music, Video and Image applications with all common codecs, Internet and networking applications for all your needs. All this on less than 350 MB. And as you know MCNLive, it is desktop oriented and easy to use. Look at the full list of installed packages to discover the not so obvious tools ;-) A graphical wizard is included to put MCNLive on a USB Stick to run it in LiveUSB mode. Wireless with ndiswrapper. Thanks to the Mandriva developers in Paris the auto-ejecting of the CD is working again. New bootcodes for Laptop widescreen resolutions, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050. Install live additional software, free Mandriva sources are preconfigured. MCNLive-Leuven is based on Mandriva Linux 2006 and enriched with upgrades. It's my good-bye-present to the wonderful Dutch and Belgian Mandriva Community. I wish to move on. It also means that I will stop releasing customized mklivecd scripts. I am still unsure which Linux distribution I'll be using. One with many active (kernel) developers, one with a strong community. One with a focus on multi-languages and Europe. One which cares about the average home user, which gives free access to the source code and does not 'invite' you to pay or donate to get priviledges. Some tips for 'Leuven': (Leuven is a cute little town in Belgium.) Put it on your (512 MB) USB stick in no time, using a graphical wizard. No need to hunt for command line instructions or obsure (MS) tools to prepare the stick. Or, even worse, to buy an expensive preinstalled thumb drive. Remember: Linux is free :-) Just burn the iso file to a CD, start it up, insert your USB stick and take a look in the MCNLive menu. MCNLive comes in three languages: root is an Englishman (in Amsterdam), mcnl is Dutch. Both can switch on the fly their language, and yes, both can switch to the Frisian language :-) The Leuven release has an enhanced hardware detection. The standard mode (just pressing enter at the initial screen), starts the automatic configuring of the detected hardware. Many bootcodes can change/alter this behaviour. Look at the bootcodes.html file in the main directory of the CD. If some videocards and/or monitors don't get the best resolution, you can tell MCNLive to start with certain settings, for example if you have a Laptop with a widescreen of 1280x800 resolution, type this: livecd noxauto xres=1280x800. Or if you want to load the standard vesa video driver: livecd noxauto xdrv=vesa Load from the beginning a certain keyboard layout (though you can do this with one click later): livecd keyb=be You can use a combination of all bootcodes. Example: livecd noxauto xdrv=vesa xres=1280x1024 nosound nonetwork noscsi noapic nolapic acpi=off fstab=ro MCNLive is designed for running in Live mode. On a CD or on a USB Stick. It is not the purpose to install it permanently to the harddisk. Period. Sure, it can be installed, all LiveCD's can. But we did not include an easy to use graphical installer. - If you want Linux permanently on your computer, use a reliable Install CD, for example with Mandriva One and (k)Ubuntu the LiveCD is also an installation CD. You are missing your favourite software? No problem. With a working internet connection and enough RAM, you are able to add applications while running live. Just use the Mandriva Control Center to browse thousands of available packages. If you encounter any problem booting into GUI, most likely this is a problem with configuring the videocard. Try this: At the initial screen hit F1. At the boot: prompt type: livecd noxauto xdrv=vesa If this does not work, type: livecd init 3 Login as root, password is root. Run: XFdrake. Make your settings. Type: startx --chris http://home.tiscali.nl/berenstraat http://www.mandrivaclub.nl
