!!! The Dynamite: BOOM for Vector Linux ======================================= Hi folks. I know you must be busy and happy with your new Vector Linux 4.3. So I wonder if you can spare small partition (600 GB) to try this Vector Linux Dynamite 5.0rc2. It introduces some new feature that, given your votes, will be in the Vector Linux 5.0. The new things that might justify the 190MB download: 1. New setup This one got great inspirations from this forum. * Can install from CDROM, Harddisk as well as ISO file directly. No more problem of lacking cd-writer or bootable cd-drive. * The installer remains text mode based. * Has better navigation, can use ESC key to back now. * Can install to separate root / and /home partitions. * Use bulk install (bz2 files) for core systems * Then allows selectable packages (tgz). * Unattended installation (though only 10-20 minutes). * Flexible configuration * Allow to use backupsys for configuration (see VASM). * Change root password and add first user. 3. New Vecpkg system Use this to download and install more packages. * Use tree structured packages repository, with clear base libraries dependency. * Improved vecpkg utility. * Downloaded packages can become a mirror by turning on proftpd. 4. New VASM This has been tested for a while so many of you may have known it. The recent changes are: * vbackupsys: backup system file so it can be used during reinstall 5. Vector packages tools. This tools is for vectelopers to contribute packages * Patched checkinstall to create packages with dependency info. * makedep utility to add dependency info for a tgz. * vecteloper, the automatic package builder for Vector Linux. 6. Some more fancy things I believe these might not be appropriate for VL standard. So enjoy it while you can on the VL Dynamite. * After install, meet the new face of LILO. * Fancy XDM. Use vbootset to set mode 4 or 5 to see it. * Autologin. Launch vbootset and try it. I keep the size down, so the dynamite contains almost no applications. But you can always use the vecpkg to get more from FTP repository. This is the screenshot of Vector Linux Dynamite (thanks to Maf3000 for the stunning background). I believe Vector Linux standard will be more beautifull.
